Ignition System Trouble Shooting.

Last time we discussed how magnetic fields cause current to flow in wires. The current flow is then harnessed to make the spark plugs work.

Now we will discuss how to trouble shoot this system.

First of all the system consists of:

-A flywheel with a magnet

-A magneto with a main coil and a switching coil

-An On/Off wire

-A spark plug and spark plug wire.

That’s it.

{In the olden days you had a switching circuit called points, but I will not bore you with that. I have several old motors that have points. (If you are really interested in points I will write an article about trouble shooting those…but not today.)}

So what’s the problem?

The problem is that I was riding my go kart… blew the chain… made a massive clunk…engine still ran right up until I shut it off. I replaced the chain and now it won’t start.

What do I do? Cry? Uh…No…

First off all look at the system. So the engine not running must be symptomatic of

-No Gas

-Flooded (too much gas)

-No compression

-No Spark

-Switch is off!

So yes, I checked.. there is gas. (check!)

The engine has nice resistance and compression (no thrown rods, no loose valves, everything is tight…) (check)

Yes I checked it was ON! Also I removed the off wire from the switch near the engine. Still nothing. (check)

Pulled the spark plug out and tested for spark:

No Spark:

The possible causes for no spark are:

Faulty Spark Plug (ie short circuiting because of ash contaiminents, broken insulator, too much gas on plug)

Or a faulty ignition mechanism

Well I cleaned the plug well. Used a different plug…

Note: But you know what I should have done first? I should have taken the plug wire and tried it against the engine. Well I tried that too: no spark.

Not looking good here… What do we do next?

This is where stuff starts coming apart.

Understand that the system involves the flywheel, so we need to access it and see if the flywheel is okay.

By “okay” I mean the following:

-Is there a magnet in it anymore?

-Did it get damaged? (very unlikely) Check with screwdriver: does it stick? (check, yes there is a magnet)

The next critical thing is to check the keyway. 8 times out of 10 the key gets sheared. This can occur from sudden stops of the engine. A sudden stop can occur from various reasons such as a broken chain grabbing hold of an activated clutch. An instantaneous shock load can be introduced into the system.

The other way an engine can be come jammed suddenly is if the rod blew inside, or the engine ran out of oil (seized up).

Is it in the cat’s best interest to be included in the travel plans?

Many people like to take their animals with them as they travel. While cats are most comfortable in their home environment, some cats can adapt to travel rather well. Certain life situations such as relocation, an extended stay with a relative who is ill, or a serious relationship headed toward marriage or cohabitation, may require your cat travels with you on an as needed or routine basis. I discourage traveling with cats, because they are incredible athletic and it’s is extremely easy to loose your pet as you pack, travel, stop at rest areas and once you’ve reached your new destination. Most cats get very nervous traveling and may become dehydrated or ill. If you are relocating, your cat is likely to become agitated and may try to run away before or after your move. If it’s in the best interest of your pet to include them in your travel plans, or if you are relocating, the following tips may help.

Preparation.

Before you plan a trip with your cat make sure that the pet will have a safe place to stay once you reach your destination. When you stay at a hotel, even if you’ve stayed at the same hotel dozens of times, confirm each time you travel that they still accept pets. When you stay with friends, don’t assume they will love your cat as much as you do, and make sure no one has a cat allergy. Find out if they have pets and whether their pet is very friendly with all animals in their home. Many friendly dogs and cats become very aggressive when another animal is placed in their home. Most often, I discourage anyone from subjecting a cat to another animal for a short period of time. It’s traumatic to most cats and increases the likelihood your cat will run away–given any small opportunity.

Help your cat love the carrier.

Several weeks prior to your trip or move, purchase a cat carrier for each cat. It should be large enough for them to stretch, turn around and lie down. If you have more than two cats, they all get along very well, you have a long trip, and you have a vehicle like a mini-van, you may want to consider buying a dog kennel that will accommodate all your cats. Whether you’re using a cat carrier or a dog kennel, pad the bottom of the carrier with a fluffy towel, or an old sweatshirt. If the towel or sweatshirt smells like you, your cats comfort level is increased. Get the cat comfortable with the carrier a few weeks before you travel. Keep the carrier door open and feed them in or around the carrier. For example if you have two cats and two cat carriers, I suggest placing a little wet food in each carrier at meal time. Do this 3-4 times a week for a few weeks before your trip. Leave the carrier door open so the cat can leisurely walk in and out of the carrier.

Avoid injury and minimize trauma for the cat.

Never haul cats in a carrier in the back of a pick up truck exposed to wind, weather and the elements. If you’re moving and renting a moving truck, keep the cat in the carrier with you in the truck cab. Never load a cat in the back of a loaded truck or moving van. The carrier and your cat could get crushed as your belongings shift. You could kill or injure your pet.

What to do when your trip or move is in the near future.

Shortly before you begin your trip or move, locate and pack your pet’s health certificate or veterinary records. When you travel with pets the rabies vaccine must be current. Many states have additional requirements. If your pet needs any vaccinations, get these done at least two weeks prior to your trip. This gives the cat an opportunity to recover from the vaccinations, and minimizes the risk of illness. Tape the health certificates or veterinarian records to the top of each carrier. Be sure your veterinarian’s phone number is on the record as well in case you have an emergency or a law enforcement official needs to check your records. If you do not normally use a collar on your indoor pet, it would be good to do so now. Write your phone number on the collar so it can be read from a distance, and make sure it’s easy to read. It’s wonderfully, shocking how many lost cats are reunited with their guardian because their collar had a phone number.

If you are relocating, your pet is old, or your trip is more than a couple hours, purchase a small, flexible, disposable litter pan for each cat. These can be placed in the carrier (before you load the cat in the carrier) the day you travel. Your cat may lie in the litter, but it encourages your cat to use the litter pan. If your trip is less than two hours, a towel or sweatshirt in the bottom of the carrier is sufficient.

The night before your trip or relocation.

Keep cats enclosed in a familiar area, such as a bedroom or kitchen-make sure they have a litter box available. Cats seem to be amazingly psychic and like to hide the day of the trip. Put the carrier in the room and leave the carrier door open. This will make it easier to load the cat in the carrier in the morning. Feed the cat its normal meal the night before your trip, but do not over feed. You may want to try and use an herbal produce called pet remedy. I use this every time I relocate with my cats and it helps reduce their stress. At least 5-6 hours before your trip remove all food. Remove water a few hours before your trip.

On your day of travel

Make sure your vehicle is packed first and in such a way as to leave room for the carrier(s). Pack the cat(s) last. Be patient! If your cat has been easily going into the carrier with a little food try to get them to do so again. If they won’t go in, pick them up, gently place them on the floor in front the carrier with their tail or butt near the carrier’s open door-you are going to back them into the carrier. Keep one hand around the cat’s ribcage, take your other hand and with an open palm press against the cats face so they will back into the carrier. It helps to have the carrier back against a wall. Once the cat has back into the carrier, keep one hand on the cat and gentle swing the door closed as much as possible. Slide your hand out but keep an open palm as you close and lock the door. This keeps the cat from bolting out of the carrier. Make sure the carrier door is secure and load your cat in the car. Try to get this right the first time. The more often you’re unsuccessful at loading your cat in the carrier, the more difficult this procedure becomes. Feel free to practice this once or twice several weeks prior to your trip. (When practicing prior to your trip, open the cat door immediately after a successful load, and give your cat a treat or meal.)

Begin your journey.

Now that you and your cat are safely in the car you can breathe a sigh of relief. Most cats meow for up to an hour as you begin your trip. I’ve had some cats that meowed a few minutes and then settled down, and other cats who let out blood curdling cries for an hour. Sometimes it helps to cover the carrier with a dark, but breathable fabric, or you can cover ¾ of the carrier, leaving the door uncovered. Covering or partially covering a carrier helps a cat feel more secure. Make sure the cats are kept in moderate temperature at all times during your trip. Also, play soothing music as you drive, and as much as possible ignore them. The most important thing you can do now is arrive at your destination safely. If your trip is less than six hours, leave your cat in the carrier until you arrive at your destination. The only thing you need to monitor is how much the cat pants. Since cats do not perspire, they will pant when their heart beat is elevated and when they are hot. It’s normal to see some panting because a car ride is very stressful for most cats. If you see excessive panting, your cat drools or begins convulsions stop as soon as possible and call your veterinarian.

Upon arrival

Carry your cat (in the carrier) inside the new destination and place the cat in a single secured room, such as a bedroom or kitchen. If you have multiple cats, bring all the cats in first, before you open any carrier doors. Also, bring in a litter pan and water bowl. When you open the carrier door, let your cat come out by themselves. Be sure your cats have continuous access to water during as you settle into your new surroundings. It’s best to keep the cat in a single room or small area until, you are certain the cat could not get out. If the cat is an indoor/outdoor cat and you’ve relocated-even if it’s in the same city, keep your cat indoors for 14 days. If a cat has just been relocated or is in a new environment and gets out during the first few days it’s very likely to get lost, become disoriented, and maybe hit and killed by a car.

The week following a trip or move.

Watch for signs of illness and dehydration. It’s normal for some cats to have diarrhea, sleep even more than normal, or vomit once or twice the day after the trip. If these conditions do not clear up in a day or two, if you notice blood in the urine or stool, or if the cats skin can be pulled and does not spring back into the body, seek veterinary care immediately. The sooner you catch and treat illness or dehydration, the more likely and quicker the cat will return to good health.

Final thoughts.

Every cat is different. I once had an orange tabby that loved to ride in the car with me. He ran to the front door when I picked up my car keys. I never used a carrier with him. He peacefully sat on my lap every time we got in the car. I currently have a large grey tabby that likes to ride in non-motorized boats. You know your cat better than anyone else. Check with your veterinarian if you have questions about the best way to travel with or relocate your cat. Keep in mind that cats are athletic and like security. Many easy going cats get agitated, dehydrated or run away while traveling or moving, so please use caution with your pet.

If you’ve ever watched as a cat “flipped” over fresh catnip perhaps you’ve been struck with the question; “what causes Catnip to affect cats that way?” Catnip is indeed an unusual phenomenon among cats, it has the ability to alter your cat’s behavior like nothing else can. So what exactly is the reason for what scientists have coined as “the Catnip effect”?

Unfortunately for such inquisitive minds the exact reason of why Catnip affects cats in such a manner remains mostly a mystery. There is however much that we do know about Catnip and cats even if we don’t have the ultimate answer of exactly “why?” yet answered.

The Science Stuff

Catnip is scientifically classified as Nepeta cataria and is a perennial herb from the mint family and is in fact also referred to as “Catmint”. It is a plant indigenous to Europe but has been exported and is now found all over including the United States and Canada.

The active ingredient in Catnip is an oil; Nepetalactone, which is found in the leaves of the plant. This is the reason you are able to find Catnip in a bottle or spray form in some pet stores.

Other Uses For Catnip

Catnip is not only good to stimulate activity in cats, it can also be used by humans as an herb for a medicinal tea which may soothe toothaches, help against coughs, and may also perform as a sleep aid. Furthermore, Catnip can be used as an herb on salads or other foods as has been the case for centuries in France. Lately Catnip has also been garnering favor as a natural insect repellant rivaling the effectiveness of many store bought varieties of repellant.

Catnip and Kitty

Catnip affects approximately half of all cats. What determines whether or not a cat will react to Catnip is a genome that is inherited (or not inherited as the case may be) at birth. Kittens, regardless of whether or not they carry this genome, do not react to Catnip until reaching about 3 or 4 months of age and becoming sexually mature. Older cats are also more likely to have a diminished or non-existing reaction to Catnip, which leads scientists to believe that the Catnip effect is based at least partially on sexuality and that the reaction may be something like an aphrodisiac. Further adding to this belief is the similarity of a sexual pheromone found in the urine of the male cat to nepetalactone (the active product in Catnip).

Cats that can be traced to regions where Catnip is not indigenous appear to be unaffected by Catnip. The domesticated housecat is not the only cat that may be affected by Catnip. Larger cats can also be affected by the Catnip effect, felines such as the bobcat, lynx, tiger and even lion are known to react much the same way the common housecat would. It is interesting to note that while Catnip can act as a stimulant when a cat sniffs it, it can conversely act as a relaxant if ingested. Therefore, you may see a different, nearly opposite result depending on whether your cat chooses to eat the Catnip you provide for him/her or merely sniffs it (the latter being the more typical behavior).

How to Use Catnip With Your Cat

Catnip can prove to be a very useful tool for a few common problems with your cat. If you are lucky enough to have a cat that does react favorably to Catnip then here are a couple of ideas for you and your furry little friend.

Catnip and Lazy Cats:

Catnip can be used to get a lazy cat off his or her butt. Some cats are notoriously lazy, choosing to sleep much of their day away in a nice golden patch of sunlight on the living room carpet, only waking up to eat and gather some necessary attention from their indulgent owners. If this sounds like your cat, you may soon see (if you haven’t already) that your cat is becoming more and more round. This is generally not a good thing. Catnip may be able to help. Presenting catnip to your cat encourages activity (of course provided the cat sniffs rather than eats the herb).

Many adult cats will respond to Catnip in a manner that resembles their childlike kitten hyperactivity, jumping, playing and running around as if it was given an injection of kitty adrenaline, which in essence, is the case. The effect of Catnip on a cat can last somewhere between two and fifteen minutes. If the latter is the case, then this is a decent amount of exercise and will help keep your cat a little more svelte than without a Catnip treatment. Furthermore, if you leave the Catnip out for a few hours then your cat may return to the herb later (an hour or two after the effect has worn off) and again react in an energetic fashion. So in this sense you may consider Catnip sort of like a kitty energy drink.

Catnip and Cats That Scratch Furniture:

If you have a cat that seems bent on the destruction of your furniture then Catnip may again be able to come to the rescue. Cats can be frustratingly picky about just about anything under the sun including where they want to sharpen their furniture destroying claws. It is not uncommon for a cat to damage or destroy a piece of furniture just because the owners finally gave up on trying to redirect their cat to the unused cat scratching post that set them back anywhere up to a hundred dollars and more. A good way to attempt to change this frustrating and expensive behavior is to rub some Catnip or Catnip oil on a scratching post that you are attempting to get the cat to use. Introduce your cat to the newly “Catnipped” scratching post and see how he/she reacts. If all goes well, your cat will sniff and inspect the post and then begin clawing at it. After a few times (you may have to re-Catnip the post) hopefully kitty will be trained to use the post rather than the sofa.

Using Catnip with Multiple Cats

If you’ve never used Catnip before and you have more than one cat it is advisable to try it out individually on each cat before introducing it to all of your cats at the same time. The reason is because Catnip affects some cats in a negative manner causing the cat in question to become aggressive rather than merely playful. Introducing it to your cats individually enables you to control the situation and keep a cat that may react aggressively isolated from your other cats. This of course means avoiding a possible catfight that could result in broken furniture, hurt kitties (possibly requiring a vet visit), annoyed neighbors (and probably owners), or a combination of all of the above.

Growing and Keeping Catnip

Growing your own Catnip can be rewarding as it can save you money, give you the satisfaction of doing something yourself and ensuring that you always get fresh, high-quality Catnip for your cat. A word of caution however; the exact kitty reaction you want to grow your own Catnip is something to be wary of. If you plan on growing your Catnip out of doors and other cats can access your Catnip garden then be prepared for unwelcome feline visitors. This may not be a problem for you personally, but cats are by nature territorial and if you have a cat that lives alone without the company of other cats this could prove to be an area of stress for your cat. Even if you keep your cat inside at all times, your cat may get agitated if he/she looks out the window to see another cat frolicking in territory your cat considers his or her own. If you choose to grow your Catnip indoors, be careful to keep it out of reach of kitty. Otherwise you’ll likely have Fluffy jumping up on furniture even to the most out of the way place to get access to the tempting herb. Cats are great jumpers and not really known for respecting precious household knick-knacks. So if you do decide to grow it indoors for a cat that reacts to Catnip, be careful to grow it in a place that your cat won’t be able to access it. A room that you always keep closed to the cat is probably the best solution for indoor grown Catnip.

If you do find that your cat reacts positively to Catnip you should be sure to use it sparingly so as not to dull the effect which can be the result of overexposure. A good rule of thumb is to not treat your kitty more than once a week on average to Catnip.

Given all the positive effects that Catnip may have on your cat you owe it to yourself (and naturally your fluffy little ball of affection) to see how he/she reacts to this strange and well known herb. A cat’s claws are a vital part of their physical and psychological well-being. Many people do not realize that declawing a cat is inhumane, and a very unnecessary major surgical procedure which often leaves the declawed cat with physical and psychological problems that will last their lifetime.

Cats use their claws for many reasons such as to exercise, groom themselves, mark their territory, and as a first line of defense against predators. Cats scratch as part of a normal instinct, and taking that away can lead to even worse behavior problems. Many people believe that declawing a cat just consists of removal of the cat’s nails but this is not the case. It is actually an amputation of all the cat’s digits at the first knuckle of bone. It is a major surgery, which is very painful to the cat, and recovery and healing from this surgery can be painful and difficult for the cat. Complications such as infection can occur, as well as the general risk of anethesia during the procedure.

The declawed cat often develops litter box issues, such as not using the litter box, because the litter hurts their feet, so they begin avoiding the box and start peeing and pooping in various places around the home. This leads to further frustration on the part of the cat owner who is now faced with the cat damaging the floors and leaving behind unpleasant odors throughout the house. Cat urine odor is very difficult to remove, and a cat’s sense of smell is more sensitive than humans. Once the cat begins urinating on the floor, they will often continue to do so because, despite the owners attempts to clean the area and remove the odor, it still exists to the cat’s sensitive sense of smell, and this unwanted behavior persists.

The cat owner then becomes even more frustrated as this behavior continues. They often don’t understand why their cat who used to faithfully use the litter box now refuses to do so, and often will blame the cat for another bad behavior problem, when it is not the cat’s fault at all. If the owner cannot get the cat to start using the litter box again, they will often start considering letting the cat go outside. This poses a huge safety risk to the cat because once the cat has been declawed, they have no way to defend themselves to the many dangers that exist outside. Declawed cats cannot be let outside because they can no longer effectively defend themselves and cannot climb trees to get out of harms way. Once a cat has been declawed, there is not an option of safely converting the indoor cat to be an outdoor cat.

Another common problem with cats who have been declawed is biting. Because they do not have their nails anymore, the cat can become very frustrated. The scratching instinct that the cat has can no longer be satisfied and can lead to the cat starting to bite. Even the best behaved cat can become mean and unsociable and because they no longer have their claws, they resort to biting as a way of letting you know they are unhappy. I am aware of many cases where cat declawing has had a negative impact on the cat and its social behavior. This, however, does not happen in all cases. Some cats who have been declawed seem to do just fine and adjust to their situation without difficulty or resulting behavior problems. But, many cats do not adjust well, and the owners often end up feeing guilty that they did this to their pet.

The best thing a cat owner who is considering having their cat declawed can do is plenty of research. Find out all there is to know about the procedure, the risks, and the outcome. Talk to others who have had their cats declawed and get their opinions. Do not just take a vet’s approval on this issue. Some vets will say it is no big deal because they stand to profit from the surgery, and they do not have to live with the cat afterward. Other vets will discourage this procedure because they know it is not the right thing to do. Make sure the decision you make is an informed one. You do not want to end up with regret, as this surgery is permanent.

There are many options the cat owner has as an alternative to getting their cat declawed. One option is to purchase nail caps which are caps that are glued to the cats nails to prevent the damage from scratching. Another choice is to learn how to safely trim your cat’s nails to keep them short and dull which will reduce the damaging effects of scratching. Provide several different styles of scratching posts and cat trees in your home to encourage your kitty to scratch the appropriate things. Scratching posts made of sisal rope work really well and cats seem to enjoy using them to scratch on. Try using double-sided sticky tape on the areas where you don’t want your cat scratching. It provides a surface that cats do not enjoy and will deter them from scratching there. Buy some scented deterrent sprays that are made to keep cats away and spray it on areas where the unwanted scratching is occurring. It may take a little more effort on your part, but the outcome can be very successful without having to put your cat through a declawing surgery.

Cat declawing has been banned in many countries, unfortunately as of yet, the United States has not adopted this law, and hopefully this will change. Anyone who is considering putting their cat through this should consider and try all the other options. There is just not a good enough reason to put your cat through such an awful surgery. All children are born with the potential to be creative. However, their potential can be stifled if we do not take the care to stimulate and nurture that creativity. Our creativity shows who we are as a unique individual. Have you heard the saying – “there is no such thing as can’t.” We can and we will! Creativity is an important facet to any personality. It enables to see things in a different and unusual way. This is an important problem-solving skill throughout anyone’s lifetime – the ability to think of different alternatives to solve a problem. Or to see problems other may not have noticed and come up with effective solutions to those problems.

What is Creativity?

Creativity is originality, expressiveness, imaginative, to give rise to, to produce, to portray, to give character to, to evolve from one’s own thoughts, to bring into being, to conceive, to parent, to throw together, to give rise to.

There are many different aspects to creativity. It is basically the ability to produce new and useful ideas from everyday objects, and solutions to everyday problems and challenges. It is a translation of gifts and visions to produce something new and useful.

There is no one agreed definition of creativity. Creativity is mainly researched within the field of psychology. In this, it is usually claimed that being creative means being appropriate and novel.

So what are the personality traits of highly creative individuals?

Personality traits of Highly Creative Individuals

Creative individuals will be able to look at every day and familiar things in a new light. They will be able to see things that are out of the ordinary, not obvious.

A highly creative individual will -

1. Produce a wide range of ideas or solutions to problems and questions. Often, they will be unusual or clever.

2. They will show a lot of curiosity about things, constantly asking questions.

3. They will have interests in many different, unrelated areas.

4. They may develop collections of things based on their interests.

5. They may be willing to take risks.

6. May show heightened emotional sensitivity, for example, being particularly sensitive to beauty.

7. Often, they are willing to express their opinions without inhibition.

8. They will be tenacious and persistent about their ideas and projects.

9. Can often be conceived as non-conformist.

10. They may appear chaotic or disordered.

11. They may not seem to be interested in detail.

12. They do not fear being labeled as “different”.

13. May be unwilling to accept authoritarian pronouncements without detailed explanations of

why the pronouncement is correct.

14. Be open to constructive criticism.

16. Highly creative individuals will often show intellectual play, often daydreaming or imagining. They may come out with new ideas, then are able to modify or improve on their ideas or the ideas of others.

Encouraging Creativity in Children – What not to do

Children develop creativity because of what we SHOW them, not because of what we tell them to do or not do. It is amazingly easy to discourage children from being creative, but why discourage it. It is easy to steal experiences from children, experiences in their culture, education and upbringing, because we do not encourage their creativity. Hennessy and Amabile (1992, Goleman, Kaufman and Ray, 1992 – The Creative Spirit) identified some common “creative killers” that are commonplace in our schools and homes.

Evaluation – Constantly looking at what children are doing, evaluating them, commenting on what they are doing, worrying about what they are doing can make them worry and not realize the value of what they are doing. Also, it can make them lose the enjoyment in the actual process of creating some thing.

Surveillance – You know how you feel when someone is standing over you watching what you are doing? You probably hate it, or start to make mistakes or get flustered. This surveillance or constantly watching children can have the same effect on children. It can make them feel as though they are under constant observation. It may make them resist the opportunity to take risks in their creativity or hide their creative abilities.

Rewards – Offering rewards and motivations for their creativity can reduce the need for the child to create things for creativity’s sake – for the enjoyment of creating something.

Competition – Creativity does not have to be about competition. We all have creative skills in different ways. If we encourage children to compete against each other, to create the best picture etc, it can reduce their creativity. There will always be one picture that is better than the others, there will always be one bit of junk modeling that is better than the others. Anything created by a child should be praised for its own value and worth, not compared to the models or pictures of other children.

Restricting Choice – If we TELL children what activities to engage in, it can reduce their curiosity and passion to create. They should be allowed to explore and experiment with their own creativity and method of production.

Over-Control – If we keep telling children how to do things, how we think they should do things, this can reduce the creativity and originality of the child. It can leave the child feeling that what they are doing is not good enough, a mistake or it is a waste of time trying something new.

Putting Pressure on Children – By putting pressure on children, it can actually give them an aversion to creativity. If we expect amazing results every time a child creates something, this can put unnecessary pressure onto them. This can again restrict their ability to perform or to experiment. Also, if our expectations are too great, it may be because they are beyond the child’s developmental level.

So how can we encourage children to be creative?

1. Encourage children to keep trying – they may be the most creative child in the world, but if they do not keep trying and do not see any task through to completion, we will not know how creative they are and can be.

2. Show appreciation for their efforts – praise them!

3. Try not to help them too much. Resist the temptation to take over or to finish the task for them.

4. Try not to supervise too much. Allow them to be spontaneous. Having self-confidence is essential to the development of their creativity.

5. Provide a creative atmosphere. Allow the child easy access to creative equipment, such as clay, drawing books, pens, paper. Provide them with toys that encourage creativity. If you’re worried that they may start drawing on the wall, ensure that they understand there are only certain areas they can do their “messy” play, such as the kitchen, or conservatory. Tell them often enough and this will sink in.

6. Daydreaming – daydreaming is an important process. It enables the child to imagine things and different outcomes. Some aspects of day dreaming are important for developing problem solving skills. BUT don’t let the child day dream TOO much. If you feel the child is sitting day dreaming too much, ask them to fill you in on their daydreams, perhaps they can lead to fun activities. For example, they tell you part of the day dream, then you fill it in a bit more, then they add a bit more and so on. It can then become a game.

7. Let the child be “different”. Let the child know that there is no “right” answer to a problem, they should be encouraged to be unique and innovative. If it doesn’t work this time, hey, who knows it might work out with another problem.

8. Encourage problem solving and planning in many different areas of their lives. When they solve a problem (or don’t solve it), encourage them to look at why and how they solved it, so they can use the skills in other areas.

9. If the child doesn’t want help, don’t pressurize them, but if they ask, offer them the support they want.

Children, like adults, need rules to live their lives by. Children need to learn to control their behaviour according to the situation and rules of society. There are times and places where creativity may not be important, for example, colouring on the wall with felt pens is obviously not appropriate in most households. However, there should be a balance between the times when children can be creative, explore and experiment. Sometimes choices should be restricted and direct instruction given, but at other times, children should be given the choice to explore and develop their creative abilities. It is important that the child does not go through life only learning about rules and conformity, not creativity and joy.

Encouraging Creativity in Children – Drama and Playacting

Drama and Playacting

Drama and playacting are great ways to encourage children to be creative. There are so many ways you can do this.

Pretending to be Anything

Ask them to pretend to be something – a cat, a dog, a giant, a car, a lawnmower, the world, a pencil sharpener – anything they want to be. Get them to think about what it is like to be a lawnmower or the world or a cat or a dog. This can also be done within the context of story telling. See the article on Story telling.

Get them to make noises that they imagine the thing they are copying would make.

Cut out some pictures and ask each child to pick a picture. They then have to pretend to be what’s on the picture for two minutes – a cat, a dog, a car – whatever’s on the picture.

Try and get them to be spontaneous.

Have an Adventure

Pretend something exciting is happening.

Get your children to shut their eyes, tell them the car can fly when their eyes are shut and they wish long enough. When they open their eyes and say it’s not flying, you can say – “well, that’s because you opened your eyes!” Then get them to imagine where you could fly to.

You see a man jogging. Ask them why they think he is running. Is he running away from pirates? Is he the world’s fastest runner? Is he running around the world? Where is he going to? The questions are endless.

Plays

If you really want to get into this, you could encourage children to put on plays. Ask them to make up a story, then they can act it out to you. Perhaps put on fancy dress costumes, use silly voices, make some props. It doesn’t have to be expensive or look fantastic. They should be able to use their imagination to do these things.

If they don’t want to make up a story, perhaps they could act out a story they already know.

If they really enjoy this, they could perhaps do the play for friends or other relatives – grandparents, aunts etc.

Again, making the props or costumes or inventing the story are ways to encourage them to think creatively.

The Shy Child

You will always find some children who are reluctant to get involved in this sort of creative play. Start with small steps. Perhaps they don’t want to appear “silly” in front of their siblings or friends. If they don’t to take part, perhaps encourage them to watch you and the other children playing. When they see how much fun it can be, hopefully they will want to take part. If they don’t, encourage them to be involved in some other way, such as handing out cards, making props, etc. It may be that they are not children who want to be involved in drama-type play, but they may be creative in other ways – drawing, colouring, creating props etc.

Don’t stifle their creativity – just encourage it in another direction!

Encouraging Creativity in Children – Junk Modelling

Junk Modelling – get your household junk (well, the clean kind anyway), boxes, toilet roll tubes, kitchen roll tubes, cereal boxes, paper anything you can find. Give the kids some glue, some pens, some scissors (if they’re old enough or help them if not) and let them loose. See what they come up with. A hotel? A house for their dolls? A cave? A car? An animal? Whatever is in their mind, they can create. If they sit their looking blankly, encourage them to “see” things differently. Pick up the cereal box and say, “doesn’t this look just like a house” “or a car” “or a spaceship?”

Doesn’t this toilet roll tube look like a rocket or a snake or a telescope?

Give them the ideas and let them run with them.

Encouraging Creativity in Children – Telling Stories

Stories – Stories are a brilliant way of encouraging creativity in children. You can do this in so many ways.

Adults

You tell the story – tell a story without a book. If you’re not a natural story teller, perhaps you could read a child’s book first and then perhaps change the names and make it slightly different. Then sit down with the child and tell them the story without a book. Make faces, do silly voices, encourage them to do the actions. You might feel silly at first, but the more you do it, the more you’ll find your own inner creativity!! And besides it’s fun to be silly sometimes!!

If you’re feeling brave, you might like to make up your own stories. Kids love stories involving themselves. Make the characters have their names. If you’ve got lots of children to tell the story to, this might not be a good idea, as some children might feel left out. But if you’ve got one, two, three or four kids with you, I’m sure you can think of different characters with their names. Don’t be worried about giving their names to animals or aliens or cars or whatever. Children will usually think that is really funny. Bear in mind the child though, if you don’t think they’ll find it funny to be a pig or an alien, then think of something else.

Adults and Children

Tell a story together. You can start this in a simple way. You can all say a sentence, so you might start.

“One day, it was very dark and Bill was in bed when he heard a loud noise.”

Then one of the children says a sentence -

“Bill was scared, he didn’t know what it was.”

Then another -

“He thought it might be his pet alien, Nigel”. Etc etc

Let them be as silly as possible – being silly can lead to great imaginative stories. Then you can go on and on. Other adults can also be involved.

When doing this, be wary of it going on for too long and becoming boring.

If it seems to be going nowhere, start another story.

If the children don’t seem interested, get them to start the story instead of you. They might pick something that is more interesting to them then.

Children

Ask the child to tell you a story. Ask them to make one up. You may find that at the beginning the stories are a bit short or a bit repetitious, but the more you encourage the child, the better a storyteller they will become.

If they struggle with this, get a picture book (without words if possible) and ask them to make up a story around the pictures. Or show they pictures from any book, such as a book about fish, or animals or houses and ask them to use those to make up the story.

If you’re feeling really creative, get the children to cut out lots of pictures from magazines or draw lots of pictures. Put the pictures on cards. Then sit in a circle. Each child (and adults) picks up a card and has to carry on the story from there.

If the children seem to find story telling really difficult, go back to basics. Show them a picture and ask them to imagine something. For example, show them a picture of an old man. Ask them how old they think he is, what they think his name is, is he friendly, is he grumpy, is he happy etc. Do this often and it will encourage them to think more about things they see around them.

Do the same with animals. Ask them to give a name to the animal, a personality, what do they like to eat – again encourage them to make up silly things, as well as “real” things the animal may eat.

Books

Above all, books are still a VERY important part of the creativity process. Read to your child, do it whenever you can. Don’t just leave it until bedtime. Reading can be a great part of a bedtime routine, but it shouldn’t be the only time. Some parents may find that their child is really tired at bedtime and doesn’t want a story then, so why not read during the day. Sit down with your child anytime you can and read them a story.

If you struggle to find the time for whatever reason, ask another adult to read to them. If you have an older child, ask them to read to the younger children – this will improve their reading skills as well.

Above all, remember story telling should be FUN!
